Adoption is a choice full of options, and you might be surprised to learn what’s available.
What Are My Adoption Options?
Adoption focuses on making an adoption plan, which outlines your desires and goals within the adoption process.
You’ll work with an adoption counselor to create your adoption plan. During this process, the adoption counselor will ask you questions and listen to your feedback to determine the type of plan best for you.
An adoption plan is unique to you but falls into one of three categories:
- Open adoption. If you want open communication between you, the adoptive family, and the child, this plan is right for you. With open adoption, you and the adoptive family and child will be able to communicate and maintain a relationship. Together, you decide how often you want to communicate and in what ways (via phone, in person, etc.).
- Semi-open adoption. This plan is similar to open adoption, but all communication is mediated by a third party (like the adoption agency). For example, the adoption agency can send letters from you to the adoptive family without revealing your address.
- Closed adoption. This is the most restricted adoption plan. With closed adoption, you won’t know anything about the adoptive family, and they won’t know anything about you.
Is Adoption Right for Me?
Adoption is a selfless, loving choice that gives your child a future. However, it can be an emotionally difficult choice to make.
To understand if placing your child for adoption is right for you, it can help to ask yourself the following questions:
- How might I feel if I choose adoption?
- How might I feel if I don’t choose adoption?
- Do I understand how the process works?
- What questions do I still have?
If you’re considering making an adoption plan for your pregnancy, it’s critical to speak with a reputable adoption counselor and agency to learn all you can. At Peak Women’s Care, we can give you basic information about adoption and connect you with a reputable agency.
